Our plans

We are still imprisoned by the weather.  Although it is -10 at Patriot Hills, windchill to -20, winds 10 knots and gusting – it is still closed in on Mt. Vinson.

The Twin Otters are flying to the South Pole.  There are two groups of clients on that flight those going to see the South Pole, and those that are skiing the last degree (of latitude).  The Vinson group is holed up in Patriot Hills.  One of the climbers from the Mountain Madness group has opted to go back to Puntas Arenas (the Russian beast flew in at 3 am last night with another load of adventurer’s) in order to guarantee he is home for Christmas.  The Mountain Trip group is doing well and sends their hello’s to their loved ones.

There has been lots of discussion amongst the different Mt. Vinson groups as it is entirely clear that even if we fly to Vinson tonight there is no way we will be able to make the flight out on the 16th.  There is a flexible (not hard to imagine – weather being what it is) flight from PH to PA – which they will hold for the Mt. Vinson climbers.  As a result the team has opted to hope for a flight to Mt. Vinson in the next few days and return on the flexi-flight, which will be about 7 days later.  Hence it is highly unlikely that any of us will be home for Christmas given the delays we have already experienced based on weather.

Though this is not the ideal arrangement we do want to give ourselves every chance to see/summit Mount Vinson Massif.  However ultimately it may not be in the cards unless the weather starts to finally answer our prayers.

  1. I am holding my breath and praying for good weather. Remember Christmas is a day that can be moved. And what a great gift – summitting! Dave sent me an email – your story is on CNN today. You are all famous.

  2. Merry Christmas

I’ll send you all an early Merry Christmas under the assumption that you will not be back in time. Hopefully by doing this I will somehow reverse jinx the weather and everything will then go smoothly and you will both make the summit and make it back in time. Good Luck!!

  3. Antartica group

Congratulation for reaching this location.I see the making of a book that could really raise awareness re cardiac transplant and fundreaising.
    Keep well and stay well.
    Best regards.

  4. Hi from Paediatrics @ Credit Valley

Hi Dave and gang. Thanks to your sister, we are all following along on your adventure. Thanks for the weather update…we’ve all booked our tickets to the Cayman! We hope everyone gets the opportunity to reach the summit of Mt. Vinson. We’ve got everything crossed and have said a few prayers. A couple of confessions went along with the prayers because of a few guesses on what FDH meant….hard to believe those of us that work with kids think that way.
    “Warmest” wishes and happy climbing!
From all the nurses on Paediatrics @ Credit Valley Hospital! (oh ya…and Lyn!)

  5. Good Thoughts and Well Wishes

I can’t even begin to say how motivating you guys are for everyone in the world… as you typed one day – for “testing your limits AND for testing your patience!”

There has been lots of press – CTV, etc. covering your story which is fantastic!

I walked by the big poster on the outside of TGH (on University) yesterday and thought how much work I’m sure has gone into what you are doing and.. now you’re…almost there… I’m sure the skies will clear for you!

I am going into Canmore AB next week and will ask the mountains where you trained to send good luck and good weather to the mountains in Antarctica for you!

    Warm Wishes from Canada!

    Take care
    Stacey (from Masimo)

  6. huh?

I guess I’m lost…there are people flying in? to ski ‘to’ the south pole? As in not actually skiing to the south pole from the edge of the continent but having a plane shave a good chunk of the distance off and then go home to tell everyone they skii’d to the south pole?

    or did I miss something?

  7. Pat and team

Hang in there. The weather will clear and you will climb to the summit. You are so close to the goal – you will remember climbing to the top for the rest of time and you won’t remember that you weren’t home in time for Christmas. The pictures are great – what an incredible landscape. All our love and happy climbing!

PS Kyle is sure he is right but wants to know what a Starbucks is.

  8. Ian and others,

The pictures so far look amazing. It looks like everyone is having a good time and that everything except for the weather has gone well. Hopefully your week and a half of bad weather will turn into a streak of great weather and you will be able to make it home for Christmas. Dad, we are all really upset to hear that you might not be home on the 25th. Asides from that, it looks like your having a pretty awesome time. Keep up the good work,

    David

  9. merry christmas

I was on the elliptical trainer and saw the blurb on CNN.,I would say that you are now MORE famous (know what I mean?). I am with Dave, wishing you a merry christmas in the hopes that the wish changes the travel fortunes and get you on the D__M mountain….we are sure thinking about you

  10. Holiday cheers

I’m pretty sure Santa goes that far so hang in there. You may have to settle for the presents from the bottom of the bag but I’m sure you all would even be happy with a lump of coal to burn. I’ll also bet that Barry isn’t out of epic stories to keep everyone rapt around steaming hot cups of butter tea. There is always next year… for Christmas, of course, so good luck and good weather. Harv#2 PS Dale, I’ll call in to book off for you, just get your Doc to write you a note.

  11. Patience really is a virtue

Congratulations on deciding to follow through on your quest to climb to the summit of Mount Vinson Massif. Your pride in accomplishing this climb and the success of your fund raising endeavour will soften the disappointment of missing this Christmas with family.

    Good luck and Godspeed,

    Paul & Jeannette Lafontaine

    Hi Tish,
Thank you so much for the call! I think we lost the signal. I was totally surprised you sound great and I expect the team is great as well. Take a picture of the crazy fools running a marathon. That I have to see. Everyone here is doing well. Went to Dad’s appointment with Mom and now their house is sleeping better. Good news for the New Year as in January she will be taking advantage of the respite care. Dr. Strong is really nice man and is being great to Mom. Thought you might like to know. Enjoy every moment. We are with you every step.
    Lots of love sis,

  18. Here’s Hoping . . .

How disappointing for you all! We seem so capable of beautifully controlling our lives the majority of the time. Wouldn’t you know that nature doesn’t care in the least! It’s good that you are taking advantage of what you ARE able to do, given the restrictions. We keep hoping that you’ll still get that flight and, at the least, make an attempt at the summit. Know that we continue to think of you and wish you well.

    Mel and Michael Hinch,
    Barrie, ON

  19. ice marathon

Are you guys considering a 100K marathon on the 15th, just to warm up before the climb? I couldn’t believe there was such a thing…
    Take care and good luck.
